PRESS RELEASE 24/08/06
PROJECT COLT - CHANGE OF LIFESTYLE TRAINING
Trained volunteers from the Christian community in Calderdale have been working hard over the last 3 years to develop Project COLT charity, a community initiative helping to address problems associated with addictive behavior. A successful grant of £10,000 from the Urban 2 Community Chest and money provided for training from the Local Network Fund have made it possible for this exciting initiative to develop further. The money will be spent on providing group work and professional counseling to benefit people in Calderdale who have struggled with various forms of addiction. Our main sponsor and supporter is KingsChurch based at the Kings Centre on Park Road, Halifax and links are developing in Calderdale and across the UK with other statutory services and similar projects.
Project COLT offers choice and help is provided in a variety of ways to the addict and their families. Addiction to alcohol or to a substance or even a behavior pattern when entrenched in a person's life acts as a 'remover'. It will take happiness, reputation, employment, friendships, sanity, vision for the future and wise decision making. It has the power to remove food, furniture, homes, family relationships and a person's ability to adjust and live with others and ultimately life itself. Our goal is to help bring restoration to those individuals inclusive of their families who are committed and motivated to change their lifestyle.
Our specialist Structured Day Programme runs on 2 days a week for 12 weeks and includes 12 Step and Relapse Prevention workshops. A team of mentoring and support workers are on hand to help out. A Self Esteem Course is a new venture aimed primarily at women affected by addiction this will run for half a day concurrent with the Structured Day Programme. Other developments include parenting workshops for supporting families, and affordable individual professional counseling.
In the main Project Colt is a free service to benefit those affected by addiction. This community service is available to all adults over the age of 18 who live in the area and have a supportive network; we make no distinction of gender, class, race or religion. Applications are now being taken for all courses starting in September 06.
The structured day programme is based on Francis St at Park URC church and the counseling service and self esteem workshops at 5 St James St, Halifax.
Project COLT is not a prescribing or clinical service and unable to support chaotic users, we will however refer to appropriate services. We are endeavoring to build strong links with statutory bodies including the local drug services to make sure that our students get the best possible holistic care and medical treatment.
